The Polcast War, also known as the Fythung Extermination, was a terrible conflict that took place at the beginning of the Second Era between the Fythung and the Msirae Avengers. The war was the plot of the Fythung King Denai-Ves to expand his wealth and personal influence over the Black Marsh. Denai-Ves was aided by his long time friend and subordinate Death-Blade, the leader of the ruling council of the Fythung, the Storm Council. Death-Blade himself sought to rule the Fythung. The War began shortly after the assassination attempt to kill Eric Snowmane. The Msirae Avengers were what kept the Fythung's ambition's at domination at bay. After the failed assassination attempt, the Msirae Avengers saw it as a chance to to destroy the empire, and to start the war.
The task of combating the Fythung fell to courageous and heroic champion, Eric Snowmane. Snowmane had to work to penetrate the Fythung's web of deception and shadow. Without a lead or contact, the war could not be ended.
The Polcast War was fought in all of the Black Marsh. Over the course of the war, one fort would be virtually destroyed and the others laid siege to before Snowmane penetrated the Fythung's web and defeated Denai-Ves in the Assault on Fort Lorgrim, destroying the Fythung's headquarters and destroyed the Fythung's power base and leaders.
The Polcast War's beginnings were mostly the work of Death-Blade and the Storm Council, who set the stage for the war to begin, learning of Denai-Ves' ambitions, immediately went to work on a plan to kill the Emperor, his heirs, and other key figures, including administrative and militarial.
The Fythung proceeded to launch an attack on the royal family. Four of the Emeperor's heirs, Silver-Tail, Scarlet-Heart, Black-Heart, and Blue-Heart, were slain before any attempt could be made to protect them. Concern immediately rose for the life of Emperor Gold-Heart, and his safety was made top priority. The Emperor's organization of bodyguards, the Imperial Protectors, planned to take Gold-Heart to Fort Order, the headquarters of the Msirae Avengers.
The Protectors arranged for Gold-Heart to be spirited out of Blacklight before any assassination attempt could be made. Twenty-five Protectors, led by Gaius Arctus, took the Emperor away from the Palace and across the nearby river on a ferry. Before the ferry's landing, however, they encountered an unlikely obstacle. The river that they had to go across to escape was violently flooding.
The group finally landed, and entered a series of ancient Kothringi ruins. They were unfortunate in that the Fythung had caught up with them, and they were ambushed left and right as they made their escape. During the first ambush, 4 Protectors were killed, and Gaius Arctus at point, killed several members of the Fythung. Gaius led them further among the passages, until at last, in the main passage, the Fythung were successful in trapping them.
While his guards fought desperately, Emperor Gold-Heart turned to his heirs and told them to stay close around him and protect him. At that moment, the Imperial Protectors came back to the Emperor, and led by Gaus Arctus, proceeded to Fort Order.
After the assassination attempt, a Fythung spy was captured lurking around Fort Order. He was captured, and tortured until he gave the Msirae Avengers a name. The name he uttered was Denai-Ves and the Fythung. The Msirae Avengers were dispatched to hunt down, root out, combat, and kill the members of the the Fythung. The Polcast War had begun.
Msirae Avengers spy's, reported sightings of skooma dealers, blackmarket members, and known Fythung members in the area around Talare Plateau. Further investigation revealed that the Fythung had set up a camp in a ravine on the plateau. The Msirae Avengers, immediately set forth to Talare. The Msirae Avengers' Archer Corps surrounded the ravine, and lit their arrows on fire, and poured forth death and destructon upon the surprised camp. The rest of the Msirae Avengers members swept through the camp, killing many members of the Fythung, and losing little men.
Surprise Attack at Forgoth CaveEdit
After the Ambush at Talare the Msirae Avengers searched the camp and discovered several referenes to Forgoth Cave, an enormous cavern in the Lorgmir Mountains. Following the orders of their commander, Eric Snowmane, the Msirae Avengers marched to Forgoth Cave and assaulted it.
The Msirae Avengers followed their leads and assaulted Forgoth Cave, finding a large Fythung base there. The Fythung held the Avengers at the front entrance for more than thirty minutes. Then Eric Snowmane, himself came to the battle and fought his way through the door. The time window though had given the Fythung enough time to set up a palisade. It took an hour, but the Msirae Avengers eventually overcame the brave and ruthless Fythung defense.
The Avengers proceeded into the cave and killed many more Fythung members as they went. Eventually they came to the situatuion room, and found a Storm Council member there. The Eviscerator and his bodyguards killed many of the Avengers and then escaped. But the battle was still counted as a victory for the Avengers.
After the Assault on Forgoth Cave, the war's fortunes ebbed and flowed. At one point the Avengers seemed on the edge of victory, only to see it snatched from underneath them. After many more battles, the Msirae Avengers set up camp at Klopper Point, a huge bluff near Blacklight.
That night an assassin, Lumbar gro-Khog, attempted to kill Eric Snowmane. Snowmane was grievously injured, but managed to throw himself out of his tent and into the river. The assassin killed all of the men in the camp.
The assassinations continued, and at its height, over 400 Msirae Avengers had been assassinated. Octavian Gratus, the second in command, and Eric Snowmane's nephew, was hunted down and cornered by the Storm Council. Death-Blade took his dagger and interrogated Gratus and then finally cut his throat, and mutilated his body. The body was later delivered to Snowmane, who was horrified at what had been done.
But instead of demoralizing him like it should have, it only encouraged him to destroy the Fythung.
End of the Storm CouncilEdit
Catching word of a Storm Council meeting at Mount Lorgrim, he set out with his army and began attacking the Fort Lorgrim, the only entrance into the valley where the Storm Council was meeting.
After a month long siege, the Avengers finally managed to break through and into the Fortress slaughtering the remaining members of the Fythung, but when they reached the valley, the Storm Council had retreated through a secret cave system higher into the mountain. The Avengers found the entrance to the caves, and slaughtered the remaining Fythung members defending their leaders.
The Storm Council meeting room at Fort Lorgrim.Denai-Ves fought and killed more than a hundred Avengers, with the other members of the Storm Council getting equally impressive amounts of kills, but they were eventually overwhelmed. Eric Snowmane was killed fighting with Death-Blade. Death-Blade was later killed by an archer while retreating. The surviving members of the Council turned into warlords and fought over the remnants of the once great Fythung.
Though the war's main theater was in Black Marsh, the other provinces came under attack as well, albeit to a somewhat lesser degree. Not much is known about the Polcast War in the other provinces, though Blackwood, were hit hard. It seemed that Caload in particular had the Fythung marching all across the land.
Battles and ConflictsEdit
While almost nothing is known of battles in the other provinces, in Black Marsh there were many clashes between the Empire and the Fythung. They are as follows (major conflicts in bold):
