Helkarus Vultar was a Dunmer Vampire Lord who lived during the Second, Third and Fourth eras. He was one of the most powerful Vampire Lords, if not the most. Apparently, Molag Bal hadn't turned Helkarus in a vampire lord due to his sacrifice, but due to his ambition.

Biography[]

Birth[]

Helkarus was born in the middle of the Second Era in Morrowind, on the island of Vvardenfell. He was the son of a wizard of House Telvanni.

Rising to Power[]

He was trained by his family in all schools of magic, and became a very powerful mage. He rose his own Tower in east Vvardenfell, a tower who became known as Tel Vultar.

Dulin's Flame[]

Near his tower, there was a small dunmer settlement known as Dulin's Flame. Helkarus visited the settlement after he learned that the settlement's owner, Dulin Firemouth, had stolen his prized Ring of Blood (ironically, he stole it from a vampire lair) a ring which largely increased a vampire's power. Although he was not a vampire on that time, he was secretly learning of the great power of the Vampire Lords, and he desired to become one himself. He planned to use the settlement's inhabitants as a sacrifice to gain Molag Bal's favor so he can turn Helkarus in a vampire lord.

Massacre[]

When he arrived at Dulin's Flame, he shoot down all the houses and structures, burning everything within. After the entire place was at blaze, he captured all of the inhabitants (including its leader) and sacrificed them in an altar of Molag Bal.

Vampire days[]

Molag Bal passed the disease to him and after three days of strange and creepy sensations, he finally a Vampire Lord. In his first days as a vampire, he drank all the blood of his servants and guards and his tower was set on blaze by the local dunmer after they learned of Helkarus's treachery.

Flight from Morrowind[]

He managed to pack up whatever stuff he would need and left the useless stuff (goblets, candles, etc) in the tower to burn. He then fled to a underground vampire nightlair in north Skyrim, a large cave called Bloodsucker's Retreat. The vampires residing in that lair didn't believed at first that Helkarus was a Vampire Lord, the master vampire challenged Helkarus to a duel so he could prove that he was powerful.

Takeover[]

During the duel, the master vampire used the vampire's weakness (fire) on Helkarus. But the master vampire had no idea that the Dunmer have a great resistance to fire, vampirism would only decrease the resistance. Helkarus then morphed into a grotesque, green monster with red eyes, pale skin, wings, and immense power. The master was so astonished that he didn't even had time to attack Helkarus, as Helkarus completely destroyed him with thunderbolts. The other vampires quickly submitted to Helkarus and he became the new master of that coven.

Reputation[]

Helkarus's clan, which was named Vultar Clan, gained a relatively high reputation in Skyrim. Helkarus and his vampires often raided settlements resulting in the capture of citizens, but the number of deaths was much higher.

Expanding the clan[]

Helkarus's hunger for power wasn't over, he wanted his clan to become one of the most powerful. So he conquered several other vampire lairs, forcing the leader and its inhabitants to submit to him or simply intimidating the rest by killing the leader. He also conquered several bandit hideouts, enthralling the bandits. At the end of the Second Era, the Vultar Clan's reputation was pretty high and Helkarus had many caves and ruins in all of Tamriel in his possession. His second in command was Leceril Red-Eye, an altmer vampire.

Learning the location of Arkenvund[]

Like many other vampires, Helkarus strongly worshiped Molag Bal and would do anything for his master. Helkarus was one of Molag's favorites, alongside Lord Harkon and very few other Vampire Lords. And because of that, Molag Bal revealed the location of the great ancient fortress of Arkenvund, a great fortress (both in the surface and underground) built by Molag Bal in the early First Era. Only true followers of Molag Bal were granted the honor to be allowed to rule the fortress, Helkarus was surprised that his master revealed the location. Molag Bal said that the fortress was located on the border of Skyrim, Cyrodiil and Morrowind.

The Ruins of Arkenvund[]

When he and some of his clan arrived there, they found nothing but a great ruined castle, alongside a hole. Helkarus learned that the fortress was buried by snow and dirt, and so he figured out that Molag Bal wanted to test him, Molag Bal wanted to see if Helkarus could rebuild Arkenvund. Helkarus would never disappoint his master, and so he started to excavate the ruins and rebuilt the destroyed parts.

Excavation of Arkenvund[]

Helkarus knew that none of his vampires would want to dig (he himself didn't wanted to) but they surely wanted that fortress back on its feet. Their number of thralls however, wasn't enough for rebuilding and excavating a fortress of that size, and Helkarus planned to enthrall loads of professional miners and workers. So he did it, he sent some of his clan to many settlements in all of Tamriel to lure the workers to a isolated place and enthrall them. His plan worked, and he spent years in that ruin.

Arkenvund rebuilt[]

It took 276 years of the Third Era to excavate and rebuild the entire fortress. When the excavation was finished, most of the thrall died because of years of hard work with little food and water, and no rest. Helkarus and his clan didn't gave a damn about the workers' deaths, and the Vultar Clan became five of the most powerful vampire clans in Tamriel, alongside the Volkihar Clan. Molag Bal was so pleased, that he allowed Helkarus to re-name the fortress to Vultar's Domain.

Years of Glory[]

Although his domain was his main headquarters, he still kept his other caves and ruins. He put a trusted master vampire in each lair, and allowed them to enthrall anyone to re-build the ruined forts. The Vultar Clan's reputation was so great at that time that most of Tamriel knew of them... But there wasn't anyone who would dare to attack his domain or declare war at him.

The Oblivion Crisis[]

Helkarus wasn't very affected by the Oblivion Crisis, he lost some of his caves and forts in Cyrodiil and in Morrowind, but he didn't cared at all.

Encounter with the Dragonborn[]

He encountered the Dragonborn while walking in the mountains near Vultar's Domain, the Dragonborn unsheated his sword. But Helkarus remained calm.

"Oh easy there, lad. You don't want to become my slave..."

— Helkarus Vultar

Helkarus then hit the Dragonborn with a rout spell, which was too powerful to the Dragonborn. And because of that, the Dragonborn fled.

A Spark of the Storm[]

During the Fourth Era, after the Aldmeri Dominion collapsed and the Empire of Tamriel returned to power, they focused themselves in destroying the Vultar Clan. As the Vultar Clan was feared and had ravaged countless settlements. Helkarus Vultar wasted no time in preparing himself, enthralling thousands of mercenaries, soldiers and other professional warriors and mages. Cyrodiil striked some of his forts, and he made sure to fortify all of his holdings. Not counting the thousands of thralls he had, he also had countless vampires, maybe 1-3 thousands of vampires. A bloody war would then begin, from a spark to a storm.

The court-wizard of Solitude, Sybille Stentor, learned after interrogating a Vultar Vampire that the Helkarus planned to conquer Solitude and was hiding his forces in Pinemoon Cave. The Solitude Garrison then sent a handful of men (and some imperial soldiers) to the cave and a bloody battle occurred inside the caves. The vampires were defeated and Helkarus was greatly angered.

Final Battle of Kvatch[]

More reinforcements have arrived at Cyrodiil and have attacked the city of Kvatch. The Nerevarine, the Dragonborn and the imperial legion managed to wipe out the invaders with great casualties, but not as much as Chorrol.

Cornered in Vultar's Domain[]

After his defeat at Morrowind, Skyrim and Cyrodiil, Helkarus and his main army were cornered at Vultar's Domain. They have been unable to send reinforcements mainly because the imperial legion, the redoran legion and the nord army of Skyrim have surrounded Vultar's Domain and Helkarus himself doesn't wants to waste any more men (he knows that they will not make any progress in the enemy provinces. But Helkarus is far from convinced that he will lose the war, he has organized his army to defend Vultar's Domain to death.

Siege of Vultar's Domain[]

Images

The combined forces of Morrowind, Skyrim and Cyrodiil stormed Vultar's Domain. The legions were led by the Dragonborn, the Nerevarine, the High King of Skyrim, the imperial legion general and the high commander of the redoran guard. Helkarus had already organized his army and at the end of 7 Morning Star of 4E 213, thunderbolts, fireballs, blizzards, battleaxes and swords were spilling blood on Vultar's Domain. Days of battle passed and the legions were at the lower sections of Vultar's Domain, fighting their way to Helkarus's Quarters. Thousands died at that siege, and blood was at every corner of the fortress, both mortal and undead.

Skirmish at the Great Hall[]

After one week of battle, the mortal legions finally reached the Arkenvund Great Hall, where the most powerful of the Vultar Clan were waiting. Hours passed while thunderbolts tore mortals apart and fireballs incinerated vampires, and while the legions fought the vampires, the Nerevarine, the Dragonborn and the arch-mage of the Synod entered Helkarus's great chambers.

Final Stand[]

"I swear I could smell your blood from miles away from here, it is different from the other meals. You two will make a great dinner... But there is an intruder, she is not special like you, and only the powerful enter this room..."

— Helkarus Vultar

Helkarus morphed into his Vampire Lord form and murdered the Synod leader. He then focused on the two heroes. During the battle, Helkarus reanimated the Synod leader's body and ordered her to kill the Dragonborn while he killed the Nerevarine. He shot waves of absorb health spells and grabbed the Nerevarine with his claws and threw him to the other side of the room. While the Nerevarine was recovering from the attack, Helkarus shot a thunderbolt on him and he was almost dying. Helkarus grabbed the Nerevarine again and said:

"I honor my master Molag Bal by killing you!"

— Helkarus Vultar

But just as Helkarus was going to bite the Nerevarine, the Dragonborn defeated the Synod leader and jumped on Helkarus, delivering a colossal blow with his dragonbone war axe.

"Bastard!"

— Helkarus Vultar

Helkarus's face was bleeding like hell and there was a bloodspring in his neck.

"Today, your treachery ends."

— The Nerevarine

The Nerevarine then heals himself with a close wounds spell and recovers his ebony sword. And as the sword pierces Helkarus's heart, he morphed back to his normal form and said:

"I am... I'm sorry... Lord... Molag... Baalllhhhhhhhh."

— Helkarus Vultar

From his statue at the room, a shade of Molag Bal teleports from Oblivion to Nirn and approaches Helkarus's body... Taking his soul to Oblivion and saying:

"Helkarus was a loyal and powerful one, it was... Amusing to watch your battle... Hahahahaha, make sure to clean the blood on the fortress for me, poor Helkarus here spent two centuries rebuilding it... Hahahahahahahah!"

— Molag Bal

His body then turned to red ashes and his ashes were taken by Molag Bal to Coldharbour.
