— Geralt, about the Great War

Geralt Wolfs-Bane (Dovahzul: DOVAhKIiN Dovah-Kiin, "Dragon-Born") commonly known simply as Geralt or The White Wolf, Dragon of the North, Qahnaarin (Dovahzul: QAhNAaRIN "Vanquisher"), The Last Dragonborn, Dovahkiin, Ysmir, Saint Geralt, Gorald, Grahald, Gargalien, and the Dragon-God of War was a famous Dragonborn of the Fourth Era.

Biography[]

Background[]

Geralt was born in 4E 149 in Falkreath, Skyrim. He was the only son of a Nord huntsman and his wife. Geralt grew up in Falkreath and was taught how to use a bow and how to hunt in the forests of Falkreath Hold.

Geralt left Skyrim at the age of seventeen to fight for the Empire in the Great War. During the war, Geralt fought in the Battle of the Red Ring. When the Imperial City was sacked by Aldmeri Dominion forces, Geralt was taken by the Dominion as a prisoner of war. He was subjected to several physical and psychological tortures. However, Geralt did not break and was able to endure the days of torment at the hands of the Thalmor Inquisitors. After the White-Gold Concordat was signed, Geralt was allowed to escape. When he returned to Skyrim, he was not greeted as a hero. His family disowned him because he let himself "get captured by pointy-eared idiots". Geralt was exiled back to Cyrodiil and lived in the then-ruined city of Bruma for nearly thirty years. His estrangement with his family was later mentioned during a conversation with Braig in Cidhna Mine where, when asked about his family, he will respond with: "I have friends. Only family I need".

Following the conversation, Braig asks Geralt if he was ever arrested before. Geralt mentions that he always got himself into trouble when he was younger, implying that Geralt was indeed arrested before. This could also be a mention to his imprisonment by the Aldmeri Dominion during the Great war, although he did not explain this any further.

Geralt's background is mentioned again during a conversation with Serana. When asked about his relationship with his parents Geralt will say that "it is best that we don't see each other for a while", also implying that Geralt's family may still be alive during the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrm.

Return and Dragon Crisis[]

The death of High King Torygg arrived in Cyrodiil very quickly. Ulfric Stormcloak was branded a traitor to the Empire after having started the Skyrim Civil War. Geralt initially wanted to join the Imperial Legion to fight Ulfric's rebellion and avenge Torygg's death. However, after having crossed the borders of Skyrim after thirty years of exile, Geralt was arrested by the Legion. Geralt felt betrayed by the people he once called brothers. Geralt, along with several Stormcloak prisoners arrived in the town of Helgen for an execution.

When facing the executioner's block, a dragon appeared and started attacking Helgen. Geralt escaped with Ralof, a fellow prisoner. In the confusion, Geralt and Ralof managed to escape Helgen. Ralof informed Geralt about the ongoing war and tried to persuade him to join the Stormcloaks, claiming that Geralt has his own score to settle with the Empire after they tried to execute him. Geralt initially was not really convinced to join the Stormcloaks, but still felt betrayed after General Tullius tried to kill him. Together, they traveled to Ralof's hometown, Riverwood. Geralt met Ralof's sister, Gerdur and told her about the dragon attack in Helgen. Knowing the Riverwood was possibly in danger, Gerdur asked Geralt to go to the Jarl of Whiterun and ask him for reinforcements to be sent to Riverwood. Geralt left Riverwood and headed for Whiterun.

Once in Whiterun, Geralt was halted by a Whiterun Guard. The guard said that the city was closed because of the recent Dragon attack. Geralt did enter, however, after he told the guard that Riverwood was possibly in danger. Geralt made it to Dragonsreach, the Jarl's palace, but was again halted by Irileth, the Dunmer housecarl of Jarl Balgruuf the Greater of Whiterun. At first, Irileth did not trust Geralt at all, but after Balgruuf spotted him, he allowed Irileth to let him speak to him. Geralt informed the Jarl about the dragon attack in Helgen and that the owner of Riverwood's lumber mill, Gerdur, requested to have more guards be sent to Riverwood, in case of another Dragon attack. Balgruuf ordered Irileth to sent a squadron of guards to aid Riverwood. Balgruuf said that there is another thing that Geralt could do to fight the dragon menace. Balgruuf sent Geralt to Bleak Falls Barrow to retrieve a Dragonstone, said to contain the locations of ancient Dragon burial sites. Geralt then left Whiterun to get the Dragonstone.

When entering the Barrow, Geralt saw two bandits talking about a man named "Arvel" and that he ran off with a "golden claw". Geralt became curious and tried to eavesdrop the bandits but was spotted. He eliminated the two bandits and proceeded.

Geralt entered a room with enormous spider webs and strange eggs. He found a Dunmer thief stuck in a spider web pleading for Geralt to help him. Geralt approached the dark elf and in an instance, a gigantic spider appeared behind him. Geralt fought the spider and eventually killed him. The thief complimented on Geralt's skills and asked him to release him. Geralt knew that this was the "Arvel" who ran off with a golden claw. Geralt interrogated him about the claw first and Arvel claimed to know everything about the claw and promised to help Geralt if he released him. Geralt broke Arvel free but, unfortunately, Arvel was lying and ran off, calling Geralt a fool for trusting him. Geralt ran after Arvel but before he could get to him, the embalmed corpses of Nord dead started to rise from their coffins and attacked Arvel, killing him in the process. Geralt finished off the walking dead around him and searched Arvel's corpse for clues about the Golden Claw. Geralt found Arvel's journal which contained interesting details about the Golden Claw and the so-called "Hall of Stories". He also found the Golden Claw itself. Geralt kept the journal and the Claw with him and continued onward.

Geralt entered a long hallway with ancient Nordic inscriptions on the walls. Geralt knew that these were the depictions of the gods of the Ancient Nordic Pantheon. Geralt noticed such deities as the Hawk god, the Fox god, the Whale god and, finally, the Dragon god. Geralt came to a reinforced stone door that could only be opened by entering a certain pattern. Geralt observed the Claw carefully and noticed a certain pattern on the palm of the Claw. He knew that this was the key on opening the door and entered the same pattern on the door and it opened.

Once the door was opened, Geralt entered a large cavern with a coffin and an enormous wall in the middle. Geralt inspected the wall closely but could not make up the weird inscriptions he spotted on the wall. It was written in a language he didn't know of. He noticed an inscription that read: FUS, but did not know what it meant. Geralt felt a strange feeling once he read the inscriptions on the wall, but he didn't think much of it. The coffin behind Geralt sprung open and a tall Draugr stepped out, staring at Geralt with thick blue eyes. Geralt punctured the Draugr with a few arrows and searched his body, finding the Dragonstone. He left Bleak Falls Barrow and headed for Whiterun.

Once back in Dragonsreach, Geralt gave the Dragonstone to Farengar Secret-Fire, Balgruuf's Court Wizard. Geralt noticed a hooded Breton woman standing next to Farengar, who complimented Geralt on retrieving the Dragonstone from Bleak Falls Barrow. After the woman left, Irileth came running into the room and said that there was another Dragon attack, close to Whiterun this time. Geralt, Farengar, Irileth, and a Whiterun Guard went to see Balgruuf. Balgruuf questioned the guard about the Dragon and then sent him to the barracks to rest. Balgruuf quickly thanked Geralt on retrieving the Stone and he then sent him and Irileth to Whiterun's Western Watchtower where the Dragon was attacking to investigate.

Dragonborn prophecy[]

Once at the Western Watchtower, Geralt found the tower completely ruined. Irileth ordered her men to search the tower for any survivors. Geralt found a distressed Whiterun guard begging Irileth's company to leave the tower, as the dragon who was attacking was still near. In a blink of an eye, a large, yellow dragon came flying towards the watchtower and ate one of Irileth's men. A fight between the Whiterun soldiers and the dragon soon erupted. Geralt managed to hit the dragon by puncturing his neck with one of his arrows, forcing the dragon to fall down to the ground. When the dragon was dead, his body began to burn. A large burst of energy sprung out of the dragon's carcass and surrounded Geralt. After the dragon's skin was completely burned away, Geralt felt a sense of power, and he felt more stronger. A Whiterun guard approached Geralt and called him "Dragonborn". The confused Geralt asked the guard what he was talking about and the soldier claimed that in the old tales, a Dragonborn would slay dragons and steal their power. Initially, Geralt was reluctant to hear that he might be Dragonborn and refused to believe it. Irileth was the most incredulous, claiming that she traveled all across Tamriel and witnessed plenty of things that were just as "outlandish" as what just happened. She advised Geralt to return to Dragonsreach and inform Jarl Balgruuf about the events that have just transpired.

Death and legacy[]

Geraltlogo1

One of Geralt's two personal sigils, resembling his draconic heritage.

Geralt's death took Tamriel by storm. Many people gathered in Falkreath, Geralt's birthplace, to mourn his death and pay respects to him. Geralt was seen by the elves (primarily the Thalmor), as a heathen, a villain and an evil-doer, mainly because Geralt was partially responsible for the collapse of the Third Aldmeri Dominion. However, Geralt is viewed by men and most beastfolk as a divine being, a true savior of the world.

Geralt was mainly responsible for reviving the Dark Brotherhood, the reforming the Blades as dragonslayers, the extinction of the Reachmen in the western territories of Skyrim, the nigh-extinction of the Dragons, the collapse of Maven Black-Briar's criminal empire, the extinction of Skyrim vampires, the independence of Skyrim and partially, the collapse of the Third Aldmeri Dominion and the Thalmor.

Shortly after his death, Geralt was canonized by the church of the Nine Divines as St. Geralt, with his patronage mainly being warriors, men, archers, the falsely accused and the dead.

Geraltlogo2

One of Geralt's two personal sigils, resembling his status as a werewolf. Notice the spiral motive coming from the wolf's eye. This may be a reference to his allegiance to the Stormcloaks.

Ascendance to godhood[]

After his death, Geralt is believed to have been divined and ascended to godhood. Although he is not worshiped as one of the Nine Divines, he did become a primary deity in pantheons such as the Nordic Pantheon where he replaced Alduin as the Dragon-God of War, the Bretony Pantheon as Gorald, the Imperial Pantheon as Grahald and the Khajiiti and Redguard Pantheons as Gargalien. The mer pantheons reject Geralt as a deity, as they do with Talos.

Personality and traits[]

Geralt was by nature a loner and an outcast, with a ruthless streak to him that made him extremely dangerous when provoked. Despite his outwardly cold nature, Ralof notes that behind his exterior lay a fiercely loyal friend, and a man of good humour and giver of sound advice. Geralt was shown to be extremely adept at allaying intense and at times, bleak situations and as a man who would much sooner have everyone return home than to draw his bow. His experience in the world made him a world-weary man, often expressing disdain and circuitous insult to those he considered cruel, foolish, etc.

Powers and abilities[]

Geralt's Werewolf form (click to expand).

Geralt possessed a number of special abilities. Even though he was not a mage and also declared that he never practiced magic, he could still use a handful of magical spells.

  • Beast Form: Geralt was a Werewolf, able to transform into his true beast form at will. Unlike most other Werewolves, Geralt was in utter balance with his wolf spirit and had a full conscience and clear view of his surroundings and his actions. In his human form, Geralt retained the sight of a wolf. His eyes were glowing blue and he could see in the night.
  • Shouting: Geralt was a Dragonborn, a mortal with the soul and blood of a Dragon. Geralt was able to use Dragon Shouts, a powerful and dangerous power that he wielded mostly to surprise his enemies. Geralt was also naturally fluent in the Dragon Language.
  • Dragon blood: Geralt was basically a Dragon in the body of a mortal. Thanks to his Dragon blood, Geralt aged longer than most of his kin and was able to endure more pain than others.
  • Heat resistant: Geralt had a high tolerance for heat, and did not notice when he was holding something hot or bathing in water too hot for most people. He also wouldn't suffer burns from these heat sources.
  • Flame retardant: Geralt could immerse himself in flames and not be burnt. Waste from whatever was burning (soot, charcoal, etc.) would still cling to him, and any clothing he might have been wearing would burn as well. He was also resistant to dragonfire, which is magical and has slightly different properties from normal fire, although he was still wary of it.
  • Night Vision: While in his human and beast form, Geralt had clear vision in the dark.
  • Predator Vision: In his beast and human form, Geralt could literally "smell" others. He could also see their body warmth and those of every other living being.
  • Superior strength: Although he has not been observed engaging in single combat, Geralt presumably had the same enhanced strength that other Werewolves exhibit.
  • Enhanced speed: Because of his wolf nature, Geralt could - in his beast and human form - sprint faster than other humans.
  • Werewolf conversion: Geralt could turn normal mortals into Werewolves by either scratching them with his claws, biting them, or if they drank some of his blood. He got this power directly from his forebear, Aela the Huntress, who could do the same.
  • Disease immunity: Due to his werewolf blood, Geralt cannot contract any diseases.

Geralt was a famed archer, a trait which he inherited from his father. Geralt's father was one of the greatest huntsmen in the Falkreath Hold and he taught his son how to use a bow at a young age. Geralt always kept a hidden pocket dagger attached to his back, in case he had to fight in close combat. Otherwise, he would use his bow more often.

  • God powers: Although it has become a matter of debate, Geralt is believed to have ascended to godhood and therefore, gained godlike powers after his death.
